This has been very successful for us because of our insistance that any rice selling mamas buy together in groups to give them wholesale bargaining power. From a few scattered ladies we now have 120 in the Nairobi area, 34 in Mpekatoni, 34 in Ganze 16 and 10 in Watamu. There are also another 22 individual mamas selling in scattered rural locations.
We now have 499 Mamas in the rice selling business – some in groups, some doing well enough to be wholesaling (for example, to schools and hospitals) on their own. This group epitomise the Mama B way of doing things and have self seeded really successfully. Established groups will take on new women, train them and then give them little orders to start with and help them while they grow.
UPDATE We now have 70 in Mpekatoni, 20 in Watamu and the group as a whole is growing. Business is particularly good in Mombasa and along the coast.
