We started with a group of 12 mamas (again, ex commercial sex workers) who wanted to buy from Tanzania where most of the shukas are made nowadays. We now have more than 95 mamas buying and selling across the Mara, down to Mombasa and 25 who do the travelling to Tanzania. This group is growing very fast
UPDATE Sept 2015
This group is proving very versatile. In the off seasons they join with some of the rice groups and when a cruise ship is coming in they flock to Malindi and Watamu to sell to the people there. Tourists love a shukka. Many of them travel – some bringing back spices and kente from Zanzibar to sell in Kenya. They also work together with the maasai. In this way the business diversifies and strengthens.
